Notre Dame will host some top targets in June, as official visits get underway for the Fighting Irish. On Tuesday, one of the nation’s best prospects locked in an official visit to South Bend.
Lehigh Acres (Fla.) Senior high school five-star running back Richard Young will be at Notre Dame from June 13-15.
Running backs coach Deland McCullough was brought to Notre Dame to land the best of the best. He takes that job very seriously and won’t take an easy win on the trail. If the Fighting Irish assistant wants you and thinks you’re special, he’s going to be pushing extremely hard. That’s exactly what led to Young setting up this visit. The two hit it during their conversations over the past few weeks, which included a check-in at Young’s school.
The 5-11, 200-pounder is ranked as the No. 19 overall player in the class of 2023 per the 247Sports Composite Rankings. Young is the No. 2 running back in America and No. 6 overall talent in the state of Florida. 247Sports has him ranked slightly lower than the No. 33 overall player nationally.
As of today, there is only one prediction on Young’s 247Sports Crystal Ball. However, it’s a big one from one of the most respected insiders in this industry. 247Sports National Director of Recruiting Steve Wiltfong has Young landing with Alabama as this point.
Young will be at Oklahoma on June 3, head to Notre Dame on June 13, visit Georgia on June 17 and then head to Ohio State on June 24. It seems a trip to Alabama will take place as well, but nothing is official on that front quite yet.
As a sophomore, Young ran 100 times for 982 yards and 8 scores. This past fall as a junior, he carried the ball 196 times for 1,755 yards and 19 more scores.
Regarding running back recruiting, Notre Dame has one commitment locked in four-star running back Sedrick Irvin Jr. and is the team to beat for four-star running back Jayden Limarwho announces on May 26. With the Irish still recruiting four-star running back Jeremiah Lovepushing to land Young, and making it a point that they are nowhere finished at the position this cycle, this is a position everyone will be watching closely moving forward.
247Sports Scouting Report: One of the most coveted prospects to come out of Southwest Florida in recent memory. A one-cut-and-go type of running back that’s powerful enough to get it done in-between the tackles. Excellent vision and overall feel for the position allows him to get up field in a hurry and attack holes. Outstanding contact balance combined with an effective stiff arm makes it extremely difficult for high school defenders to bring him to the ground. Has experience working out of single back, shotgun and pistol formations. Limited context when it comes to pass blocking, but should be able to chip away at college-sized defensive linemen given his size and physical nature. Track background shows up on Friday nights as he’s consistently pulling away from defenses. Catches the ball well and should be able to move the chains via the screen game, if those type of plays are on the call sheet. Wear and tear not much of a concern at this stage in his development as he’s averaged only 12 carries a game his first two years of high school. Likely to emerge as an impact player for a Top 25 program given foot speed and ability to shed would-be tacklers. Will be on the radar of NFL scouts one day if everything comes together.
